What is Vaudeville Bellydance?

The term "Vaudeville Bellydance" is not widely used, so you may be wondering what exactly qualifies as vaudeville style. Well, considering the fact that the true vaudeville of the mid 1800s through 1930s incorporated just about everything, I use the term with bellydance quite loosely to describe an offshoot of the tribal fusion style. For me, and many others, vaudeville bellydance is characterized by the music, movement vocabulary, and costumes. At least one of these things is typically somehow inspired by vaudeville, but sometimes you can't really put your finger on why a certain piece says vaudeville. If the piece creates an atmosphere that makes the audience feel like they've been transported into the past and the piece doesn't clearly belong to a standard Middle Eastern style, I will generally call it vaudeville or vintage fusion.
